3D environment work for university; our brief was to reimagine an area from an old game using unreal 4 and the skills we've learned throughout the course.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers means a tonne to me, and there's a lot of iconic areas; the guild is no exception and I really tried to do it justice. I was aiming for a 'Sea of Thieves' look, with paint-stroke textures, vibrant colours and heavy wear on edges. I don't think I quite nailed that, but the result I ended up with feels both consistent and pleasing. The idea was to translate the location to modern game practices, not just in modelling/texturing/lighting but also in level design. I reworked the shape and layout a touch to make it feel less 'front on' to the camera as it is in the original, as well as a few other tweaks to the balancing of colour/material around the level, breaking up the symmetry, etc etc. It's funny just HOW symmetrical the original looks when you pay attention to it; bushes, vines and rocks are copied wholesale, for example. You never see it all in one shot so it doesn't stick out too much, but fixing that doesn't hurt.

I spent a LOT of time on this during the 5 or so weeks I worked on it, and I'm super proud of it! There's things I wanted to add, like flowers on the ground, actual wanted posters on the boards (with pictures), a few sets of thick roots to go with the vines; I also wanted some kind of interactive medium to show it in motion, as there's a few bits (grass, waves, banners) with movement. However, I had to call it done at some point, and I'm very happy with what I accomplished. There's a quick panorama for those who want to see it all in one place~

MASSIVE props to Ilona Bresson for their rendition of the floor below this one, which can be found here: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/vo1l6
I didn't copy or reference it exactly, but it was a solid confirmation that this area could work as a 3D space and a great inspiration. Their version sticks more heavily to the game's style and is a more faithful recreation ^^; It's very good, please check it out!
